Rolex has always been an innovative brand with practical innovations to help the watches become the best that they can be. These include perfecting the self-winding rotor and patenting their Easy Link clasps that expand or contract by 5mm increments to compensate for temperature fluctuations, to name a few.
They haven’t gone too much off the side like other brands do when it comes to complications and horology. In almost all cases, they have a very practical application to them. This Cosmograph Daytona follows a similar theme prioritizing form and function.
For starters, it has a feature that was first introduced on the Yachmaster 116655. Of course, what we’re talking about is the Oysterflex bracelet.
This strap is medium-sized and can accommodate a 7” to 7.75” wrist. This strap is not only comfortable but also crafted in rubber-coated two-piece titanium material and has a proprietary cushioning system. The black high-performance elastomer coating is a similar material to what you will find on the Apple watch and this strap is fastened by a folding Rolex clasp with an Oysterlock.
This clasp type was designed with the purpose of maximizing sophisticated engineering, slick design, and most importantly, to secure the most frequently used component of the watch, the clasp to the wrist.
On to the aesthetics of the watch. The 116519LN comes in an 18kt white gold case that has a polished, black, Cerachrom bezel that is highly scratch resistant and impervious to the color fading effects caused by exposure to the sun. The case measures 40mm in diameter with a case thickness of 12.2mm and offers a water resistance rating of 100m/330ft. The case also features a Triplock screw-down winding crown used for time-setting.
The watch’s face has a dark silver (steel) main dial with black sub-registers for some of the chronograph (stopwatch) functions and a small second sub-dial. The small running seconds sub-dial is located at the 6 o’clock position. The sub-dial for the chronograph’s 30-minute counter is at the 3 o’clock position with the 12-hour counter located at the 9 o’clock position.
The dial is protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Polished luminous hands and luminous index style hour markers allow great visibility in low light conditions in a bright bluish-green Super Luminova. The dial flange has finely printed minutes, seconds, and split-seconds track running around the extreme edge of the dial.
Let’s “pop the hood” and go into what is inside the watch now. Like all Rolex watches, this wristwatch is powered by a highly precise Superlative Chronometer-certified caliber. This self-winding mechanical movement is known as the Rolex caliber 4130. This is an automatic movement that is fitted with Rolex’s blue proprietary Parachrom hairspring that offers a greater resistance to shock and has paramagnetic properties protecting it from electromagnetism, the number one enemy of magnetic timepieces. The movement is also protected by a solid case back.
This 44-jewel movement beats at a steady 28,800 vibrations per hour and has a power reserve duration of 72 hours when only using the time function or 66 hours when the chronograph stopwatch function is running.
